Assignment 7: New York Times Article

In at least 3-5 sentences answer the following questions?

1. What problems does the article mention that children run into when they use search engines? The problems that children usually run into is that children usually type in questions instead of key words. This is why they are more attracted to sites like “Bing”. Because “Bing” uses more image search unlike other one’s. This is usually what they run into when using search engines.

2. What suggestions have been offered for how search engines can improve their product to lessen children’s problems searching? Some suggestions have been to use more images. instead of words because it helps to find things faster. It is also easier for these kids and more effective because it is more appealing to them. This is what has been suggested to improve children’s searching problems.

3. Do you search using keywords or questions? How does the article characterize these two types of searching? I use questions because it gives a direct answer, but sometimes it does take longer. But for me it is a force of habit because I have been doing this since I was very young. This is why I usually use questions instead of keywords. However, I should try to use keywords more often to make things faster. This article explains both types of searches and who uses them more. It calls searching in questions more childish and keywords more for adults.

4. Have you tried using images or videos to search? How does the article characterize this type of searching? I have tried using videos and images to search before. But I don’t do this so often because sometimes it does take longer to find what I am looking for. But I like doing this when I need to find something that represents something else or when I need an explanation for something other than reading it. This is when I have used images and videos to search for things I need to find.

5. What advice would you give to Internet search engine developers (like Google or Bing) for how they should improve their product? Do you think any of the improvements mentioned in the article are particularly promising? Why? I think Google is a great site. Personally it is my favorite search engine, but I do think that more images could help it. Bing I think is too complicated to search for things. I never find what I am looking for there. They should improve on how words affect your search. But in general they are great sites for searching and I do think that this article has good ideas of how to improve these search engines and they are promising because they are good ideas proven correct.
